We want to bring back the real essence of the SoNA, says Philippines DOF Spokesperson Atty. Paola Alvarez

We really hope that the ladies who are invited to attend President Rodrigo Duterte's State of the Nation Address (SONA) haven't splurged on a long gown just yet. We'd hate to see their designer pieces go to waste.

In an attempt to "step away from the norm," there has been a change in the dress code of the June 25 event at the Batasang Pambansa.

Incoming Finance Department spokesperson Paola Alvarez on Monday said that the guests, especially the ladies, will be asked to tone down their choices.

"We will downplay the event. It will not be a fashion show. We want to center on the what the President's message is to our people especially it's his first State of the Nation Address. So it will be a different take because our guests will be requested not to wear their gowns as what we have previously been seeing in the past SONAs," she said during a press briefing at the MalacaƱang Palace as reported by GMA News.

SONA will be simple, says Palace official

The Palace wants to stay away from the norm of wearing grand and
expensive attire during the State of the Nation Address of the President.

Guests will be asked to wear business attire. Ladies have the option to wear a Filipiniana, but only knee-length.

"During the previous SONAs, most people see that this is an occasion where people tend to flaunt their gowns, their dresses. We want to step away from this norm that has become and we want to bring back the real essence of the State of the Nation," Alvarez explained.

Ladies, you have less than a week to find that perfect business attire. Remember, Brillante Mendoza will be filming. You still have to put on your A-game... even if you're not in a gown.

Expect a totally simple and blame game-free State-of-Nation Address of President Duterte next week.
Paola Alvarez, spokesperson of the Department of Finance, said it was unlikely that the President would put blame on certain individuals for the problems facing the country in his first SoNA on July 25.
“As of the moment, we have no confirmation on what the President’s speech is about. But I think based from his personality, you don’t see him doing that and he is one who takes charge and he is accountable for his actions all throughout,” Alvarez said in a press briefing in MalacaƱang.
“So I think it would be the same tone and there will not be any blaming game,” she added.
Alvarez, daughter of Davao del Norte Rep. Pantaleon Alvarez, is part of the Palace group involved in preparations for the upcoming SoNA. The team, including film director Brillante Mendoza and Presidential Communications Operations Secretary Martin Andanar, earlier held an inspection of the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City, the venue of the President’s major public address.
