Taiping MP Angers Netizens with His Hari Raya Greeting Post, some even ask Malaysian Police to Take Action for it being provocative

PETALING JAYA: Taiping MP Nga Kor Ming has angered netizens with a July 5 post on his Facebook Page featuring a picture of a lighthouse overlaid over the US flag and a Hari Raya greeting.

The Perak DAP chairman largely stands accused of mistaking the US flag for the Malaysian one, with many deeming it a provocative faux pas, calling him biadap (rude), and other insults not fit for press.

Some told him to “go die”, while others called upon the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to take action.

Another point of contention was how the picture seems to be taken from the website of popular American evangelist Dr James Dobson, which is clearly indicated at the bottom left of the picture.

The caption, which includes the party’s “video Aidilfitri”, also said: “We serve to bless others, we are from the people, by the people & for the people. Selamat Hari Raya!”

Among those angered were Ganesan Subramaniam, who said such incidents happen when “idiots are voted in”.

“Hey YB get out of Malaysia and go to America! Are you just plain stupid or you don’t know how our flag looks like,” he added.

Eka Hasnan added that this sort of behaviour shows that the Opposition party should not hope for support from the majority of Muslims and Malays.

He said that Nga’s post was “very insensitive and biaDAP!”

Along with an emoji showing hands pressed together in prayer, the picture posted states “In God We Trust”, which is the national motto of the US.

This may have spurred some like Tama Saravanan Panisevam to remind Nga of his roots.

“You are (a) MP from Taiping. Not from Texas. Respect your voters feelings first,” he cautioned.

Faiz Yusoff found the post very disappointing as he good faith in Nga, while Man Syah called it “plain lazy”.

“This is the biggest public holiday in Malaysia. And this what we get? This is just a plain lazy cut and paste job. No respect at all. Why on earth do Malaysians still support this party,” he added.

However, some commenters believed that it was not a malicious act.

“I think Nga is praying for Malaysia to shown the light and be guided back to true democracy. His choice of graphics and symbolism can certainly be better! Let’s not insult him on his good intent,” said Stephen Ooi Sze Kai.

“As much as I would say that most of his posts are rather stupid and cringe-worthy, don't you find it obvious that this post is referring to the US' Independence Day,” said Chern Xun Guan, adding that Nga’s public relations team may have made a mistake with the timing of the post.
