Fire Destroys 20 Units Of A Long House In Kuala Perlis

KANGAR, Feb 8 (Bernama) -- Fire detroyed 20 units of a long house at Taman Pelangi, Kuala Perlis, here this afternoon, leaving more than 60 residents homeless.

Perlis Fire and Rescue director Fadzil Haron said this was the biggest incident which had occurred this year, and that the victims were the same residents who had been affected by another major fire in Kampung Seberang Ramai, Kuala Perlis, in 2004.

He said a distress call was received at 5.18 pm, and swift action by firemen managed to control the fire from spreading to another row of houses.

"Initial investigations revealed that the incident did not involve any casualties, only two victims were slightly injured in the head after being hit by a wooden beam while trying to save items in their house," he told reporters when met at the scene.

Fadzil said the operation involved seven fire-engines from stations in Kangar, Kuala Perlis, Simpang Empat and Arau, along with 31 fire fighters and that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim who is also the Arau MP, visited the site today and will again join Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man to visit the victims who have been placed at SK Kuala Perlis here, Monday night.

The residents were believed to have been relocated to the long house in Taman Pelangi, Kuala Perlis after a fire in Kampung Seberang Ramai, Kuala Perlis had destroyed their houses in 2004.
