Fire breaks out on Express Rakyat, train passengers escape injury

SEREMBAN: Fire broke out on the locomotive of Express Rakyat, about a kilometre from the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) Sungai Gadut Station near here on Tuesday.
In the 2.35pm incident, the train driver suffered minor injuries on his fingers while the 309 passengers were unhurt.
Negri Sembilan Fire and Rescue Department director Norazam Khamis said the Express Rakyat was heading to Butterworth, Penang from Johor Baru when the fire broke out.
"The fire was triggered after the engine broke down. Eighty percent of the engine and the driver's compartments were damaged.
"A team of firemen in three engines from the Seremban, Senawang and Rembau fire departments prevented the blaze from spreading to the coaches before the fire was put out in 10 minutes," he said in a statement here.
He said passengers who were evacuated from the train had to walk back to the KTMB Sungai Gadut Station. - Bernama
