KUALA LUMPUR: Four groups, namely the People's Progressive Party (myPPP), Indian Progressive Front (IPF), Makkal Sakti and Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Maicci) have declared support for Datuk Seri G. Palanivel's faction within MIC.
The groups called upon Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to immediately act on what they deemed as the "illegal takeover" of MIC by president Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.
Makkal Sakti president Datuk R. S. Thanenthiran said the group would be able to amass the support of nearly half a million Indian voters and were concerned about any implications it could have on Barisan Nasional.
"We do not recognise Subramaniam's MIC leadership," said myPPP president Tan Sri M. Kayveas at the Unity Ponggal celebration 2016.T
The MIC crisis erupted after the Registrar of Societies (RoS) issued a notice on Dec 5, 2014 directing the party to hold fresh elections for the three vice-presidential and 23 CWC posts.
The RoS had nullified the elections held in November 2013 following complaints of irregularities.
Palanivel and four other MIC leaders had sought an interim stay of the RoS's decision at the High Court, but were unsuccessful. Their appeal to the Court of Appeal was also denied.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak endorsed Dr Subramaniam as the MIC president and officiated the MIC general assembly on Nov 6.
