KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Umno is firmly behind Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and plans to put this on record at its coming assembly.
“For our motion on politics, I would like to state clearly that Wanita Umno will support the leadership of Datuk Seri Najib as Umno president and Prime Minister,” said the movement’s head Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.
Other motions that the wing will propose during its assembly on Wednesday are on education, religion and the economy.
Speaking to reporters after chairing the Wanita Umno political bureau meeting at the party headquarters here, Shahrizat said her movement had the responsibility to help maintain Umno’s strength as it was the backbone of the party
“We are solid in our support for Najib, and our support has never wavered,” she said.
On the decision by the Umno supreme council to break from convention by having the leaders of the party’s three wings – Wanita Umno, Umno Youth and Puteri Umno – open their respective assemblies instead of the deputy president, Shahrizat said the decision “should be supported”.
She said she had discussed the matter at length with Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin and Puteri Umno chief Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin.
“We took into account and noted the political scenario that existed today. We feel that this is the best way, so let the heads of the wings be the ones to open their assemblies.”
Shahrizat said Najib was also scheduled to officiate the Tabung Nadi Pejuang Rakyat, a fund set up by Wanita Umno to assist Wanita Umno officials who required assistance.
“With this, we hope to be able to reach out to those who had contributed to Wanita Umno,” she said.
