Will KLIA be torn down because of its cross-like shape, asks MP
PETALING JAYA: A DAP lawmaker asked if the federal government will be advised to tear down Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) due to its cross-like shape in order not to offend religious sensitivities.
Lim Lip Eng (pic), who is also the Segambut MP was responding to the decision by the Kedah state government to intervene in a housing development project following complaints suggesting that the air wells of the houses resembled crosses.
“I have seen some pictures of those buildings in Langkawi. It doesn’t look like a cross to me,” he said.
Lim also suggested that those who were making claims might have certain motives for making the issue a religious one and suggested that they get an eye test if they think that the houses looked like crosses.
He said that he had seen postings on Facebook this morning saying that KLIA looked like a giant cross and asked if the Kedah government was going to “advice the federal government” to tear down the building.
Aerial photographs of the houses had surfaced on social media and gone viral.
On Saturday, it was reported that the Kedah state government had ordered the developer of the housing project in Langkawi to paint over the air wells on the rooftops of the homes to prevent it from resembling crosses.
State Education, Transport and Housing Committee chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain was reported to have said that the developer of the housing project had not meant to create the symbol and said he had advised the developer to paint the fire break wall to a similar colour to that of the roof to solve the issue.
He was also quoted as saying that the state government had no choice but to step in because the photograph in question had gone viral on social media and added that the Langkawi local council would be contacting the developer to “immediately take action” and “be more careful in the future”.
