KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested Australian actress Eliza Szonert for kidnapping after she allegedly abducted her son from her former partner.
The 42-year-old former Neighbours star had shown up at a police station in Kuala Lumpur to be interviewed on Monday.
She was said to have snatched her son from her former partner, the boy's father, businessman Ashley Crick, on Dec 10 while dining at a restaurant in a shopping mall here.
City police chief Comm Datuk Tajuddin Md Isa (pic) said that Szonert was detained and would be remanded until Thursday.
"We will also be getting the boy's father to record his statement soon," he said when contacted Tuesday.
Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Sharul Othman Mansor said that Szonert was being investigated under Section 365 of the Penal Code for kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confining a person.
It is believed that she was detained after refusing to hand over her son or reveal his whereabouts to the police.
"We are also investigating her under Section 339 of the Penal Code for wrongfully restraining a person," he said.
Szonert is supposedly stranded in Malaysia with her son after she snatched the boy from Crick in a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur.
She alleged Crick was in possession both her and their son's passports, and is refusing to release them to her.
Crick, 43, had lodged a police report over the incident where Szonert, along with two burly men from a child recovery agency, took their son away from him while he was in the restaurant.
