Hihammuddin officiating the Pandan Umno meeting on Sunday
HULU KLANG: New members for the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) should be appointed as soon as possible to allow investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) to continue, said Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.
The Umno vice-president said he supported the suggestion by Johor Baru MP Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad for Parliament to convene a special session to appoint the members.
"I agree with his stand that investigations should continue," said Hishammuddin after officiating the Pandan Umno delegates meeting here.
Hishammuddin added that the issues surrounding 1MDB must be resolved in a transparent manner and a restructuring of the company was needed.
He said no government money should be used for purposes of bailing out the firm.
"I also want to see accountability and governance. Those involved in wrongdoing or fraud should not be exempted from the law," added Hishammuddin.
Hishamuddin, who is Defence Minister, said that 1MDB investigations should resume as soon as possible as any delays would breed further speculation.
Four PAC members, including chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed, left the PAC after being appointed to the Cabinet on July 28.
Shahrir, who is Barisan Nasional Back Benchers Club (BNBBC) president, said suitable candidates should be appointed to PAC as soon as possible.
Shahrir said he had conveyed the BNBBC views to the Prime Minister, adding that the Prime Minister had agreed to hold a one-day sitting to elect new PAC members.
