KUALA LUMPUR: Police are on the hunt for a group of youths who were captured in a footage robbing and assaulting an elderly couple at their little village sundry shop in Tangkak, Johor, on Wednesday.
The footage, believed to be captured on a closed-circuit security camera (CCTV), had since gone viral in cyberspace earning, the wrath of netizens who called on the police to bring the perpetrators to book.
The video clip showed a couple believed to be in their 60's or 70's preparing to begin their business at about 10am when a youth walks into the shop and places an empty bottle, believed to be a liquor bottle, on the cashier's table.
The youth walks to and fro inside the shop and the couple appear puzzled by his actions.
Moments later, three others, two armed with long sugar canes, barge in and create a chaos.
They appear to demand for cash and valuables before the armed suspects assault the shopkeeper and violently push him to the ground.
The man's wife is also seen removing her thick wedding chain or "thali" and other gold jewellery before handing it over to the robbers.
The robbers, believed to be teenagers or in their early 20s, also wiped out the cashier's counter of cash.
Federal police corporate communications head ACP Datin Asmawati Ahmad said today that Bukit Aman carried out checks and the incident was traced to a sundry shop in Sagil, Ledang.
She said an operation to track down the youths is ongoing.
