GEORGE TOWN: A petrol station operator is now being investiga-ted by the authorities for failing to issue a receipt for 65 sen worth of sweets.
A senior government officer had lodged a complaint with the state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry and the state Customs Department as he was not satisfied with the explanation given by the operator’s cashier for not issuing a receipt.
Prof Mej Dr Jalil Atkins Lam Lim, who works with the Home Affairs Ministry, claimed that he went to a petrol station in Air Itam to buy sweets on Saturday evening.
“After paying at the cashier counter, I requested a receipt but was told that the barcode for the sweets is still not available and that it could not be entered into the Goods and Services Tax cash register machine.
“Hence, they were unable to produce a receipt upon request. The excuse is unacceptable.
“If the item is new and yet to have a barcode, then refrain from placing it on the shelf to sell. It is a matter of following the law, not how much the value of the item is.
“The value can be either one sen or RM1mil, a law is a law,” he said.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry enforcement officers and Customs officers were at the petrol station at about noon after Dr Jalil lodged the complaint yesterday.
Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry se-nior enforcement officer M. Gunasegaran said the ministry would investigate the complaint.
“The case is still under investigation. Nothing is finalised yet,” he said.
