RPK says deputy governor and two top officers under investigation for WSJ reports
(Free Malaysia Today) – Three top Bank Negara officials have been named by Raja Petra Kamarudin (RPK) as being under investigation on suspicion of having leaked confidential information resulting in last week’s explosive report in the Wall Street Journal.
Raja Petra named the trio in an article at his blog Malaysia Today.
He said the Malaysian authorities were investigating Nurshamsiah Mohd Yunus, the central bank’s deputy governor, and Shamsuddin Mahayidin and Abdul Rahman Abu Bakar.
Nurshamsiah is listed at Bank Negara as one of three deputies under the Governor, Zeti Akhtar Aziz.
The other two are directors of the bank, two levels below the governor, and are heads of departments. Shamsuddin is in charge of the Foreign Exchange Administration department, while Abdul Rahman heads the Financial Intelligence and Enforcement department, which acts against money-laundering and other activities.
FMT was not able to contact any of the three for their responses to Raja Petra’s article.
Last week the Journal as well as Sarawak Report said about RM2 billion in funds linked to government investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) had been found to be deposited in personal accounts held at AmBank’s private banking unit under the name of Najib Razak, the prime minister.
The reports said the money was deposited in 2013, the largest amount of US$700 million being deposited weeks before the general election that year, and that the accounts had been closed, one in August 2013 and another in May this year.
