KUALA LUMPUR, July 4 — French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) halted the Malaysian Under-13 squad’s winning streak in the 2015 Iber Cup in Portugal after scoring a 4-0 win in the quarter-final at the Estoril Praia Complex in Estoril today.
The win saw the French U-13 side set up a mouth-watering semi-final clash against the defending champions Chivas Guadalajara of Mexico.
The Mexican club moved into the last four after crushing home side CF “Os Belenenses” FC 6-0 in another quarter-final match, as reported in the tournament website www.ibercup.com.
The Malaysian U-13 squad under the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) had recently created history by winning the 2015 Iber Cup Costa del Sol in Spain after defeating Portugal’s Sporting Lisbon Academy 2-1 in the final.
Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin praised the boys for putting up a good show despite losing the match.
“Boys bowed out at the quarter-final stage after losing to PSG. Learn from this. Good to taste defeat & come back stronger! @nfdpmalaysia,” he tweeted.
The squad, which arrived in Europe on May 28 for a training cum competition stint, will return home tomorrow.
The U-13 squad coached by former international Lim Teong Kim recorded 21 wins from 24 matches played, netting 69 goals in the process.
