The modus operandi used in this type of fraud is not much different from the parcel scam. The victim will usually know and get into a relationship with the suspect through the Internet. Typically, suspects will claim that they want to come to Malaysia to marry the victim. However, upon arrival, the suspect or syndicate member will call the victim and claim that the suspect has been arrested by the authorities. The victim then needs to pay a sum of money to release the suspect.

Modus operandi yang digunakan di dalam penipuan jenis ini tidak banyak perbezaan dengan penipuan bungkusan. Mangsa biasanya akan berkenalan melalui internet dan kemudiannya bercinta. Lazimnya suspek akan mendakwa ingin ke Malaysia kerana ingin mengahwini mangsa namun apabila tiba di Malaysia, suspek/ahli sindiket akan menghubungi mangsa dan mendakwa suspek telah ditahan oleh pihak berkuasa atas beberapa kesalahan. Mangsa kemudiannya dikehendaki membayar sejumlah wang bagi membolehkan suspek dilepaskan.
