KUALA LUMPUR: A woman was choked and robbed by a disabled man wielding a fake gun, but was saved by passers-by who then arrested the man in Pantai Dalam here.
Kuala Lumpur criminal investigation department chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said the 28-year-old civil servant was walking down a stairwell in her apartment along Jalan Pantai Dalam at about 7.30am on Thursday when she was ambushed.
The suspect, 31, armed with a metal rod and a fake gun, grabbed her by the neck and pushed her against the wall near the apartment elevators.
The man pointed the fake gun to the victim’s head and demanded that she hand over her belongings.
“After relieving her of a smartphone and RM50 from her purse, the suspect tried to flee,” SACP Zainuddin said.
“However, as he was about to escape, a resident at the apartment block recognised him from a robbery he allegedly committed there the previous day.
“The resident shouted for help from bystanders who helped catch the man.
“The suspect was beaten up by the crowd, suffering bruises to his head, before police arrived to arrest him,” SACP Zainuddin said.
