KUALA LUMPUR: The festive air at a rally for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Saturday turned heated when police arrested student activist Adam Adli (pic), one of rally’s organisers.
The 4pm rally outside Sogo shopping complex had started with a lion dance show for the crowd of about 50 and continued with speeches from Adam, PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and Anwar’s daughter Nurul Nuha Anwar.
However, as the rally ended at around 5.15pm, a loud commotion was heard as Adam was arrested by several plainclothes officers.
The crowd of supporters chased after the policemen as they led Adam to the nearby Dang Wangi police headquarters.
A small shouting and shoving match ensued between supporters and police as Adam was then driven to the Jinjang police central lockup.
CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainuddin Ahmad said Adam was arrested under Section 141 of the Penal Code for unlawful assembly.
Just as things started to calm down, another commotion erupted when police attempted to arrest Nik Nazmi.
This time they were foiled as the crowd wrestled him out of the way and led him back to the vicinity of Sogo.
“I will cooperate but I didn’t want things to get more heated than they already were outside the station,” Nik Nazmi said when met outside the mall
