Selangorians to suffer water disruption yet again, due to diesel spill

SHAH ALAM: The unexpected water disruption at several locations in Selangor is expected to resume to normal by 8am tomorrow after four water treatment plants that supply more than 60 per cent of treated water supply to the state were forced to close for 12 hours.
Due to the closure, supply of treated water Gombak, Klang/Shah Alam, Petaling, Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Langat and Kuala Selangor deteriorated as much as 1,350 million litre causing some areas to be cut off from water supply completely.
Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) general manager Priscilla Alfred said that some areas might experience longer water shortage, for as long as three days, as the current reserve supply and alternative source of water are insufficient.
"To help ease the burden of consumers, water tanks will be supplied from time to time at areas affected by the incident.
"However, the current number of water tanks are not sufficient to be disposed to all locations at the same time so priorities will be given to highly-critical areas such as hospitals, dialysis centers and others. Consumers are advised to be cautious with water usage and only use when necessary," she said.
The four affected water treatment plants in Sungai Selangor phase 1 and 3, managed by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (SPLASH) and Sungai Selangor phase 2 and Rantau Panjang treatment plants under Puncak Niaga (M) Sdn Bhd.
It was revealed that the cause of the matter was the pollution of hydrolic liquid found in the water that was discovered late night yesterday.
Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali, through his social media said that the pollution was caused by a Diesel spill and the state government is in the midst of investigating the incident.
Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) had conducted necessary mitigation works on the pollution and the four water treatment plants have resumed operation at 4:30am this morning.
Azmin had tweeted that the state government and LUAS would investigate the incident while local governments were called to dispatch water tankers to affected areas and elevate the people's burden.
