Malaysians fighting for Islamic State identified, says home minister

Putrajaya has identified 34 Malaysians who have joined the Islamic State (Isis) militants, five of whom have been killed, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.
The Home Minister said authorities were monitoring the routes taken by Isis to transport fresh recruits into the Middle East.
"We are also monitoring possible fund transactions which are being sent to Isis by sympathisers in Malaysia.
"Malaysia is working with Interpol and other investigation agencies to ensure Malaysians do not join," he was quoted as saying by The Sun today.
Zahid said Malaysia was a moderate Islamic country which did not encourage militant activities.
Last month, The Malaysian Insider reported that Malaysian women had travelled to the Middle East to offer themselves as comfort women.
This revolved around a controversial concept arising from a Wahhabi edict around 2013 that called for Sunni women supporters to boost fighters' morale in battling the Syrian government forces.
So far, former Kedah PAS Youth information chief Lotfi Ariffin; Mohammad Fadhlan Mohammad Khir, 21; Zainan Harith, 52; and factory worker Ahmad Tarmimi Maliki, 26, have all been killed in Syria.
The Malaysian Insider had also reported that a family of four, including parents and their teenage children aged 18 and 14, were fighting alongside rebels in Syria.
The father and son are engaged in battle while the mother is a cook for the fighters. – October 10, 2014.
