The PKR supreme council unsurprisingly endorsed its president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as Selangor Menteri Besar, completing the "Kajang Move" to replace incumbent Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
The Kajang assemblywoman's husband and PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the decision after a marathon meeting at the party headquarters in Petaling Jaya which ended after midnight.
"The name that has been proposed is Wan Azizah as the party president and I believe she can ensure stability for PKR and Pakatan," Anwar told reporters, referring to the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition that groups PKR, DAP and PAS.
He said that PKR will submit the proposal for PR's endorsement at the coalition's leadership council meeting tomorrow.
Both PAS and DAP have previously agreed to change the Selangor leadership but had not decided on replacement.
"PAS agrees to a change in leadership in Selangor but the candidate was not decided, despite the fact that we had discussed it at the Pakatan secretariat meeting before.
"The candidate was never discussed in the leadership council meetings, even though there is a consensus for a smooth and orderly transition of power," he added.
Anwar announced that the change will take place "as soon as possible" following rife speculation that Khalid was on his way out over differences with the party over running Selangor state.
He added that Wan Azizah, would be able to solve outstanding issues like the water restructuring exercise, the Kinrara-Damansara Expressway and other basic infrastructure issues like garbage collection, which has plagued Khalid's second term as MB.
Khalid, a former corporate captain, became MB six years when PKR and its allies scored a shock win over Barisan Nasional (BN) in the general election in 2008.
Anwar said discussions with Khalid over his future role is ongoing, adding that the MB will continue to play a role even if he left public office.
However, Khalid said last week that he would stay out his second term. – July 21, 2014.
