KUALA LUMPUR: The Dewan Rakyat today convened an emergency sitting of parliament to urge for a comprehensive probe into the crash of Malaysia Airlines MH17.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who arrived at 9.45 am, tabled a motion to demand a comprehensive investigation be carried out by an international independent body into the crash, which was reportedly caused by the downing of the aircraft by a missile shot from a separatist-controlled region in eastern Ukraine.
"This August House firmly condemns in the strongest terms, the inhumane, uncivilised, violent and irresponsible action of the parties believed to have shot down flight MH17, resulting in the loss of 298 lives comprising 283 passengers and 15 crew who are innocent," he said in the five-paragraph motion.
The motion will also call on the House to extend its deepest regrets, profound sadness and sorrow at the unfortunate tragedy that had befallen the passengers and crew of flight MH17.
"The August House records its condolences and commiserations as well as deepest sympathies to all the family members, friends and acquaintances of the passengers and crew of MH17.
On July 17, the Boeing 777 airliner was alleged to have been shot down by pro-Russian separatists using a BUK missile at the south-eastern conflict zone in Donetsk, Ukraine.
The remains of the 298 passengers and crew was transported from Donetsk yesterday to Kharkhiv and were expected to arrive in the Netherlands on Wednesday.
The black box data recorders from the flight had also been handed over by Malaysian experts to the Dutch Safety Board (OVV) that was leading the international investigation.
The black boxes were handed over in Kiev and will be sent to Farnborough, United Kingdom for further investigation.
