Awie: I didn’t expect to be charged

KUALA LUMPUR: Popular rock singer-actor Awie said he did not expect to be charged in court yesterday for causing grievous hurt to his wife.
When met by reporters after the proceedings, Awie, whose real name is Ahmad Azhar Othman, said he did not expect the issue to come this far.
Asked if the case would affect his career, he said: “It is all in the hands of God. If my career ends here, I will accept it.”
Awie, 46, was charged in the Ampang magistrate’s court here with causing grievous hurt to his wife Rozana Misbun, 36, early last month.
Clad in a black jacket and blue jeans, Awie was brought to the courtroom at about 10.40am. Also in court were members of rock band Wings who came to support him.
He pleaded not guilty after the charge was read to him before magistrate Ayuni Izzaty Sulaiman.
Awie who was the lead singer of Wings, allegedly committed the offence at a house in Taman Ukay Bistari, Ukay Perdana in Hulu Kelang at about 1.30pm on June 2.
The charge under Section 325 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail term of seven years or a fine, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Suhaimi Ibrahim who was assisted by DPP Goh Ai Rene, offered bail at RM10,000 in one surety and applied for the next mention date.
In asking for a lower bail, Awie’s counsel Hazman Harun said the bail was only to secure attendance and not to punish his client.
Hazman said his client was a public figure and there was no possibility that his client would not attend court proceedings, adding that his client had given full cooperation while his case was under investigation.
The court fixed bail at RM9,000 in two sureties pending mention on Aug 11.
Among Awie’s popular songs are Sejati, Nostalgia Cinta, Tragedi October, Taman Rashidah Utama and Senja Nan Merah.
He has also starred in a host of box-office hits, among them Sembilu, Zombie Kampung Pisang, Hantu Kak Limah and Hantu Kak Limah Balik Kampung.
