MALAYSIA is a truly unique country. I think it’s the only country in the world where you can mock someone’s native accent without being called a racist.
In fact, it is kind of expected of you to do so.
However, a word of caution, this only works when you speaking the national language, our beloved Bahasa Malaysia.
Say for example when are buying fish from the Chinese aunty, you would put on your Chinese accent.
Then when you stop at the mamak place for teh tarik, you will put on an Indian accent. If you buy nasi lemak from the makcik, suddenly, as if by magic, your accent disappears.
This is a skill that we should be proud of.
I cannot imagine a mat salleh in London going into an Indian restaurant and ordering his butter chicken with an Indian accent.
He would be called a racist and probably be refused service.
