PETALING JAYA: Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar is expected to withdraw herfasakh (annulment of marriage by a syariah court order) petition today which she filed two weeks ago.
Sources close to the PKR vice-president said she had been persuaded by her family to reconcile with her husband of 10 years, Raja Ahmad Shahrir Iskandar Raja Salim.
The Lower Syariah Court here confirmed that Nurul Izzah, 34, who is the eldest daughter of Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, filed the petition under the Islamic Family Law (Federal Territories) Act 1984, early this month.
The case, number 14001-055-0023-2014, was first mentioned before Syariah Judge Ab Malek Awang on Tuesday and the next mention date was fixed for Feb 18.
Raja Shahrir Iskandar, who received the summons notice on Jan 16, had filed a submission to postpone their divorce case trial.
After reports of her fasakh petition started circulating online, Nurul Izzah issued a statement yesterday stating that she and her husband were doing their utmost to work out their “continuing union”.
She said she and her husband were deeply saddened by the undignified intrusion into their private lives.
“Our family is our priority, as is our time together. We thank all our supporters for their kind understanding, and appeal to all to accord us privacy,” said the statement released by the Lembah Pantai MP’s office.
However, earlier Nurul Izzah had denied outright reports of her filing for fasakh.
When asked on Twitter by Mohd Saiful Ahmad (@msaiful82), who tweeted: “salam, betul ke akak tuntut fasakh....keluar news... (Salam, is it true that you have filed forfasakh? It is out in the news)”, Nurul Izzah replied: “wassalam. Nope.”
Some bloggers have started implying involvement of a third party in the marriage.
It remains to be seen if the recent development in Nurul’s private life would have any impact on her securing a higher post in the PKR election expected to be held in April.
Nurul Izzah, who clinched the highest number of votes in the 2010 PKR vice-presidential election, has yet to announce if she has any intention of vying for the deputy president’s post.
The couple married on May 9, 2003 and have two children — Raja Nur Safiyah, seven, and Raja Jarith, four.
