PETALING JAYA: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has advised the public to settle transactions during its extra operating hours on Saturdays to escape long queues on weekdays.
A JPJ spokesman said only a small number had taken advantage of the extra working day for JPJ branches.
“Perhaps, this is because not many are aware of our extra opening hours whenever we decide to extend them.
“Unless it is urgent, I urge everyone to settle their transactions on Saturdays because we are normally filled to the brim on weekdays,” he said here yesterday.
All JPJ branches will be open every Saturday until the end of this month to clear up backlog transactions due to problems with the MySikap system.
The counters will be opened from 8am to 5pm on Saturday.
JPJ had also on several occasion extended operating hours to Saturdays after hiccups in the MySikap system led to failure in processing transactions such as road tax and licence renewals.
The spokesman said the department had sufficient manpower to accommodate the extra operating hours as officers would be taking turns to work on Saturdays.
On the stability of the MySikap system, he said no problems had cropped up so far and operations were sailing smoothly.
The MySikap system, which rolled out on Nov 1 last year, was to replace the Sikap system which could handle limited transactions.
However, instability issues had caused thousands of people to wait for days to renew their driving licence and road tax, and to register their cars.
Problems that surfaced included slow retrieval of its database, errors when inputting data, slow loading and registration errors.
On Dec 28, acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein had said that one of the problems faced was the increase in new features in some of JPJ’s products, which slowed the mainframe.
