Google's doodle remembers Yasmin Ahmad
GEORGE TOWN: Google’s latest doodle celebrates the birthday of the late Yasmin Ahmad, who is well known for her role behind a string of memorable Petronas advertisements. She was born on this day, 56 years ago.
The award-winning local film and TV commercial director, known for depicting Malaysia’s colours, and telling cross-cultural stories, died on July 25, 2009 at the age of 51.
The doodle features a water-coloured picture of Yasmin, along with the Google logo stylised in the ‘Sepet’ movie poster typeface.
Sepet (slit eyes), the 2004 movie directed by her, caught the hearts of many Malaysians with a love story between a Chinese boy and a Malay girl.
This is not the first time that the search engine has created a doodle to honour occasions in Malaysia.
But this is the first time it has honoured a Malaysian figure on its search engine on www.google.com.my.
Previously, Google had created stylised doodle for the Merdeka celebrations in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, and last year.
More recently, it created an 'election' doodle during the 13th General Election last year.
Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists.
In 1998, before the company was even incorporated, the concept of the doodle was born when Google founders Larry and Sergey played with the corporate logo to indicate their attendance at the Burning Man festival in the Nevada desert, said the website for Google Doodles.
Since then, the team ‘Doodler’s as the creators of doodles are known has created over 1000 doodles for the Google homepages around the world.
