National Cyclist Josiah Ng Involved In Serious Crash in Keirin Event at UCI Track World Cup in Mexico

KUALA LUMPUR: National cylist Josiah Ng, who was involved in a crash, is out of intensive care and stable.

His wife Kim Ong said that he has a punctured lung, a few broken ribs and broke his collarbone again (same collarbone broken in Spain 2007).

Kim said she spoke to him briefly and he sounded drowsy. Kim added that she will get another update from the doctor in another few hours.

Earlier it was reported that Ng suffered severe head injuries and broken ribs following a heavy crash in his second round keirin heat in Round Two of the UCI Track World Cup in Aguascalientes, Mexico on Saturday night.

The 34-year old was in the same heat as compatriot Azizulhasni Awang who eventually went on to the final to finish sixth overall, but the Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF) were more concerned with the fate of Josiah, who was in induced coma as doctors suspected severe internal head injuries.

MNCF deputy president Datuk Naim Mohamad said only head coach John Beasley remained in Mexico to care for Josiah, who was still in a state of coma yesterday evening.

"We are trying to constantly be in contact with Beasley and we are preparing all the necessary documents like a guarantee letter and the rest, should surgery be required," said Naim.

"At the moment, Josiah is still in induced coma and the doctors are said to be slowly bringing him out of  that state. That is all we know at the moment."

Meanwhile, Fatehah Mustapa managed to make it to the women's keirin final to finish sixth and finished 10th overall in the 200m sprint.

Josiah and Azizulhasni had earlier both created history when they became the first Malaysians to break the 10 second barrier in the 200m flying lap qualifying.

Azizulhasni clocked 9.854s and Josiah clocked 9.963s, but they had only placed 34th and 38th respectively.
