SYDNEY: The death toll from a stabbing incident at a busy shopping center in Bondi Junction, Sydney, Australia on Saturday rose to six people, including a child.

The sixth victim is the mother of the child who is still being treated in hospital with stab wounds, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
According to New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke, most of the victims are in a critical condition.

 
"Most of them are in a serious and critical condition at this point, and I don't have any further information about the victims.
"I know one of them is a little kid," Cooke told CNN.

The suspect, according to him, was shot dead after he pointed a knife at a female police officer in an incident that occurred around 4pm local time.

Cooke, however, did not reveal the suspect's identity. Based on preliminary investigations, he added the attacker acted alone and the motive for the attack is being investigated.

Reuters reported hundreds of supermarket goers were evacuated from the mall after the attack.

At the same time, CNN also reported that eight individuals, including a child, were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albenese said he had been briefed on the tragedy.
"Tragically, many victims have been reported, and my prayers go out to all Australians, those affected and their loved ones," he wrote on the X page.

Meanwhile, two male witnesses told 9 News that they saw a woman and her baby stabbed in the bloody attack.

"We held the baby and tried to save him. The same with his mother, by holding the wound to stop the bleeding," he said, quoting the CNN report again.
