Surina led MDEC as CEO from Jan 2019 to August 2021.

SURINA Shukri, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) passed away this morning.

Surina, 48 years old, has led MDEC since 2019, and contributed to the development of a number of national digital agendas.

Before joining MDEC, she worked for around 17 years in banking and investment, including at JPMorgan Chase & Co.


In 2018, she left the JP Morgan Chase company, and started the company SheNovation Ventures focusing on advisory services involving financial technology and blockchain, before in 2019 she became the CEO of MDEC.

After MDEC, she was also involved in several companies, including Capital A and CIMB.

According to a statement issued by her family, Surina died after a long battle with cancer at Ampang Puteri Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, at about 9am.

She is survived by her husband, Jasmin Ong Rashid and three children, Ean, Arianna and Zac.

Her remains are expected to be buried at the At-Taqwa Mosque in Taman Tun Dr Ismail later this afternoon.
