SHAH ALAM: Perikatan Nasional (PN) is demanding an explanation from the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing following the termination of the contract of the Director General of the National Tourism Promotion Board, Datuk Dr Ammar Abd Ghapar without a valid reason.
Head of the Arts and Culture Tourism Portfolio, Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin said, the country will celebrate the year of visiting Malaysia 2026, the accusations against King Sing's misconduct are worrying and he urges the relevant parties to investigate the matter.
"Industry players are concerned that if there is no investigation or official statement from the government, the spread of allegations will affect the country's tourism industry," he said in a statement on Friday.
Ammar when contacted by Sinar Harian on Friday confirmed the termination of the contract effective February 24.
He who has served for 36 years in the national tourism industry was apparently surprised and disappointed by King Sing's actions.
According to Mas Ermieyati, the allegations involving King Sing's actions do not reflect the integrity and ethical standards expected of a minister, especially in a country known for its multiracial and harmonious work culture.
"The accusations against him are troubling many parties. Starting from the appointment of friends and family members to important positions in the tourism office is the effect of nepotism and cronyism. Neither has a place in a transparent, merit-based government.
"Furthermore, the arbitrary exchange of government officials without reasonable grounds raises serious questions about the motive behind the action," he said.
He who is also the Member of Parliament for Masjid Tanah also stated that the alleged misuse of government funds is a serious offense that cannot be ignored.
"The tourism sector plays an important role in the Malaysian economy and any mismanagement or misappropriation of funds can have adverse effects on the industry and the country as a whole. It is imperative that such allegations are thoroughly investigated and dealt with.
"The behavior of a minister not only reflects on him, but on the government and the country as a whole. Our people are proud of their diverse and inclusive work culture but King Sing's actions are diametrically opposed to these values.
"The responsibility now lies with the government and relevant authorities to investigate these allegations thoroughly and take appropriate action. The integrity of our democratic institutions and the trust of the people are at stake," he explained.
