JITRA: An armed criminal was killed in a shootout with the police on Bukit Kechil Street, Napoh, Changlun near here on Friday.

The suspect reportedly managed to fire two shots before being fatally shot by the police with four shots.

Kedah Police Chief, Datuk Fisol Salleh said, the D9 Division of the Kedah Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) which was patrolling Op Laras in the area of ​​the incident saw a Proton Saga car driven by a man in a suspicious condition.


He said the police then asked the suspect to stop but he refused to do so.

"The suspect however tried to fire two shots at the police and the police who were trying to defend themselves, responded with four shots that hit his left chest causing the suspect to die on the spot," he said at a press conference at the scene of the incident, on Friday.

Fisol said, based on further examination, the suspect is believed to be a 57-year-old local citizen and the review found that he has four criminal records related to drugs and fake firearms.

He said that an inspection of the suspect's car found two pistols and 240 bullets.

"The bullets found were 9 millimeters (mm) 100 grains, .38 also 100 grains and 5.56 bullets used for rifle weapons such as M-16.

"The results of the examination are still being carried out by the Forensic Unit from the Kedah Contingent and the Kedah JSJ team at the scene of the incident," he said.

Fisol said the case was investigated in accordance with Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960.

He said, his party will also carry out further investigations to find out whether the suspect involved is related to any syndicate or otherwise.

"The suspect's body was sent to Jitra Hospital for an autopsy," he added.
