Daily COVID-19 cases in Indonesia surpass 10,000 mark

JAKARTA, Jan 8 -- New COVID-19 cases in Indonesia continue to rise worryingly, after they exceeded the 10,000 mark for the first time overnight.
According to data published on the republic's official website on COVID-19, covid19.go.id., 10,617 new cases were recorded in 24 hours up to noon today, bringing cumulative cases to 808,340.
In the same period, 233 deaths were recorded, taking the death toll to 23,753 people.
Jakarta province still has the highest number of cases, at 200,658 thus far, with an increase of 2,959 new cases in 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) announced on its Twitter site that the government will be enforcing restrictions on community activities for Java and Bali islands from Jan 11-25 , which among others involve controls on socio-economic activities and inter-province and inter-region travel to curb spread of the virus.
