PUTRAJAYA: There is no need to panic about the Wuhan coronavirus in the country as the situation is under control, says Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Health Ministry is working closely with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and other neighbouring countries over the matter.

"The situation is under control so don't panic," she said in a press conference after chairing an emergency high-level novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) coordination meeting at her office here on Sunday (Jan 26).

Also present were Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, Foreign Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah, Deputy Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Muhammad Bakhtiar Wan Chik, Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Immigration director-general Datuk Seri Khairul Dzaimee Daud and Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador.

Dr Wan Azizah also reminded Malaysians to not spread unverified or fake news on social media and cause panic.

"Malaysia has done well in handling (previous outbreaks such as) SARS, Nipah and Ebola, it shows that we have the capacity to take care of ourselves but we need the cooperation of all Malaysians.

"Please do not spread statements or make things viral.

"It is important for all of us to take care of ourselves," she said.

Dr Wan Azizah advised everyone to maintain their personal hygiene and urged those with symptoms to immediately go to the hospital to get themselves checked.
