CYBERJAYA: Close to three million Malaysians signed up for the e-Tunai Rakyat initiative over the weekend, with about RM66mil disbursed to the people.

Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng (pic) said the response to the government initiative since its launch on Jan 15 had been “encouraging”.

“I have travelled to various locations, both here in Peninsula Malaysia and in East Malaysia. I am pleased that there has been an encouraging response from the rakyat.

“We are confident that the Malaysian public is ready for greater adoption of cashless payment technologies.

“As of 9pm on Sunday, there were 2.9 million applications, with 2.2 million approved and RM66mil disbursed to the rakyat.

“Besides increasing the rate of adoption for cashless payments, the e-Tunai Rakyat incentive will also support the country’s economic growth, ” said Lim at the launch of the Cashless Ecosystem for Cyberjaya initiative here.

The government has allocated RM450mil to disburse RM30 worth of free shopping money to eligible Malaysians through three selected e-wallet providers.

On the Cashless Ecosystem for Cyberjaya initiative, Lim said the township was on its way to becoming a truly cashless society.

“Anyone who visits Cyberjaya no longer needs to bring cash.

“With either mobile phones, credit or debit cards, e-payments can be made, even with street vendors, ” he added.

The event also saw the unveiling of the DuitNow National QR standard, established under Bank Negara Malaysia’s interoperable credit transfer framework.
