Penang dept director charged with graft for giving son RM45,000 project

Penang National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) director Mohd Saidi Midin is charged with obtaining gratification worth RM45,472 by giving the Edu Kids Project to his son’s company, TheKiey Studio.
BUTTERWORTH: A director of a government department was charged with graft at the Sessions Court here today for abusing his position by awarding a RM45,472 project to his son’s company in 2016.
Penang National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) director Mohd Saidi Midin, 59, and his son, Mohd Al-Azhin, 28, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Saidi was charged with obtaining gratification worth RM45,472 by giving the Edu Kids Project to his son’s company, TheKiey Studio.
Al-Azhin was charged with collusion with his father to obtain gratification by getting the project to be awarded to his company.

The offence was alleged to have taken place between March and December 2016 at JPNIN’s offices on the fifth floor of the Bangunan Persekutuan on Anson Road, George Town.
Saidi was charged under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act (MACC) 2009 for using his office and position for gratification. Offenders can be jailed 20 years or fined not less than five times the value of the gratification.
Al-Azhin was charged under Section 28(1)(c) of the same Act for abetting, which also carries a maximum 20 years’ jail or a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification on conviction.
Deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Azlan Basri and S Selvaranjini asked the court to offer a high bail amount of RM30,00 per person, with their passports impounded.
They also asked the court to require them to check in at the MACC office every month.
Sessions Court judge Ahmad Azhari Abdul Hamid set bail at RM15,000 for each of the accused and ordered Saidi’s passport to be surrendered to the court.
He ordered Al-Azhin to check in with MACC every first week of the month. He set Feb 25 for case management to allow submission of documents.
Muhammad Asri Abdul Hamid represented Saidi and Al-Azhin.
