New Year's Eve blues: 23 Chinese nationals arrested over online scam

PETALING JAYA: Police detained 23 China nationals on suspicion of being involved in an online scam syndicate following raids at several units at Empire City in Damansara Perdana.
The raids were conducted on New Year's Eve following detailed surveillance conducted by the Petaling Jaya Commercial Crimes Investigation division.
Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Zani Che Din said the first raid was carried out on unit E-28-06 in Empire City, where police detained four men from China.
"We seized four laptops and four mobile phones.
"The suspects also failed to hand over personal identification documents," he said on Wednesday (Jan 1).
The second raid was conducted on unit E-42-8b of the same area, where three men from China were detained, he added.
"A total of 10 mobile phones and four laptops were seized.
"We believe the items were used for online scam activities," ACP Zani said.
The last raid was conducted on unit E-35-3B following 15 minutes of surveillance, he said.
"We arrested 11 men and five women from China. Fifteen mobile phones along with five laptops were also seized from the unit.
"The suspects also failed to hand over personal identification documents," ACP Zani said.
