Penang MCA blasts state govt for spending RM2.77mil on 15 new Camrys

GEORGE TOWN: The decision to splurge on 15 new Toyota Camry as official cars shows that the Penang government is oblivious to the livelihood problems of Penangites, says state MCA Liaison Committee secretary Yeoh Chin Kah.
"Despite the slowing economy and the pull-out of foreign investors from Penang, the state government still chose to replace its official cars with 15 brand new Toyota Camrys for a whopping RM2.77mil.
"This is a waste of public fund which could be spent on solving livelihood issues that require urgent improvement in the state, rather than for the enjoyment and comfort of elected officials.
"Some homes here encounter floods which recur year after year. The majority of the roads in Penang are congested.
"The public transportation system requires urgent upgrading as well, while existing road safety needs improvement.
"Allocations to address these issues should be of utmost importance," Yeoh said.
"Unfortunately, the state government has found that changing the official cars for the comfort of the state executive councillor is important," he said in a press statement on Saturday (Aug 24).
He also said that buying Toyotas was not in line with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's effort to rebuild the reputation of national cars.
"Not purchasing domestic cars as official vehicles shows that Pakatan Harapan leaders do not have confidence in our local cars.
"If they themselves do not have confidence in locally made cars, how will the people be convinced to support our national car?" Yeoh asked.
The recent purchase of the new Toyota Camrys are for the cars to be used as official vehicles for the state executive councillors, legislative assembly speaker and deputy, and other state officials.
They replaced cars of a similar model bought in 2013.
