PETALING JAYA: Organisers have called off a rally in Brickfields on Saturday (Aug 24) to protest against the introduction of khat lessons in Tamil schools, reported Malaysiakini.

Its organiser Shankar Ganesh said the planned rally, which was dubbed "Voice for the Voiceless" was cancelled due to two main reasons.

"I don't want to go against law and order. Without permits, I don't want the public to be affected in any way," he was quoted as saying by the news portal.

He also claimed PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (pic) had called him and requested for the rally be called off.

"Anwar called me and requested me to cancel the gathering. He has promised to help the Indian community," Shankar was quoted as saying, adding that Anwar had given them an appointment next week to discuss several issues.

Two people had been arrested during the first day of the protest on Friday (Aug 23).

Police said the two were brought in to have their statement recorded after the rally at Little India in Brickfields went ahead despite police saying the application for the rally was incomplete.
