GEORGE TOWN: A horrifying collision that resulted in an SUV plunging into the sea after another car collided with it at KM4.0 on the Penang Bridge (mainland bound) early today was captured on a dashcam.
Perai Fire and Rescue chief Azlan Hassan said they were alerted about the mishap at 2.35am.
“Rescuers found a car badly damaged but its driver only lightly injured. We have not been able to ascertain the status of occupants in the other vehicle,” he told reporters.
He said a search and rescue operation with the assistance of the Marine police was under way.
n a dashcam footage that was subsequently released today, it showed the driver of a Toyota Vios speeding to the left past a car in the middle lane. The Mazda CX-5 was in the fast lane when the Vios driver lost control of his car, swerved to the right and slammed into the CX-5, sending the bigger vehicle off the bridge.
A witness, only known as Azrul, in his 30s, was fishing from one of the pillars of the bridge with a friend at the time.
He said they tried to find the victims but were unsuccessful.
"We saw the car falling into the sea but everything happened so fast and it was dark.
"We shone our torchlights where it fell but did not see anyone,” he said, adding that they then alerted Marine police personnel who were patrolling the area.
