KUALA LUMPUR: Police seized syabu worth RM7 million when they raided the parking lot of a popular shopping centre in Ampang Jaya on Saturday.

Sources said the drugs, weighing about 150kg, had been smuggled in from Myanmar.

The raid, considered one of the biggest success by federal Narcotics Department police this year, also saw eight men nabbed.

A source said the raid was made possible due to information received from Chinese authorities, who were among the raiding party.

“We raided the parking lot about 8am and arrested the eight men who are believed to be members of the syndicate which had arranged for the syabu to be smuggled into the country. The drugs were found in a four-wheel-drive vehicle owned by one of the suspects. We believe that the drugs had only just arrived,” said the source.

He said the drugs were believed to have been smuggled in by land from Myanmar to Thailand before coming through the Malaysian-Thai border.

The source said the drugs, though worth RM7 million here, could possibly have been meant to be smuggled later into Indonesia where the price would triple.

“There is a possibility that Malaysia was only a transit point. However, we are still investigating this possibility and the modus operandi of the syndicate.

“We also seized some cash and jewellery in two other vehicles belonging to two other members of the syndicate,” he said.

Sources said police were also looking into the possibility that the syndicate involved in Saturday’s bust were tied to the seizure of RM5.6 million worth of syabu seized by the Special Tactical Intelligence Narcotics Group (STING) in Penang and Kedah on May 2.

In that raid, police had detained six members of a syndicate and seized 92.6kg of the drugs which were believed to have been meant for distribution in Sumatera.

On March 3, police seized 130kg of syabu worth RM6.2 million when they raided premises in Kajang, arresting five people in the process.

But the biggest success came a day later, when STING operatives hauled in 201.3kg of syabu worth RM14.1 million in a raid in Ayer Keroh, Melaka.
