PETALING JAYA: A man held in connection with the murder of L/Kpl Velentino Mesa was already on a plane when police boarded the aircraft and arrested him.
The 30-year-old man is reported to be a relative of the victim with whom he has a family dispute.
“The plane was getting ready to take off at the KL International Airport, headed to Sibu Airport when the police caught up with him,” said the source.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Mazlan Mansor confirmed the arrest.
“The man from Sibu was arrested at 1am on Friday,” he said.
The suspect will be remanded until Sept 7.
Comm Mazlan urged the public not to speculate on the case as it may jeopardise the investigation.
The victim, 29, was found in a pool of blood by policemen during a routine stop at the Pinggiran Subang Jaya police station at about 3.25am on Thursday.
The station is located in an industrial area, crowded with car workshops and shoplots.
Mesa was alone at the station and his pistol had gone missing.
It is unclear if the pistol has been recovered following the arrest.
Comm Mazlan said investigators have not found any evidence of personal issues like debts.
However, he did not rule out the possibility of Mesa knowing the killer as he was shot at close range.
Mesa’s case was the second death in a month involving a policeman.
Earlier in August, sub-Insp Abu Hashim Ismail, a CID detective from Bukit Aman, was shot dead while at his friend’s house in Taman Sri Hosba, Changlun.
