BEIJING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has instructed the police to put a stop to the Better Beer Festival 2017.

Zahid, who is also Home Minister, said the matter is under the purview of the police.

“This matter is under the police’s jurisdiction. I have asked for it to be banned,” he told reporters at China World Hotel here, today.

Zahid was responding to reports that the organisers of the beer festival now plan to hold it at a different location after failing to obtain a permit to hold it in Kuala Lumpur.

Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun, who was present, said the police will not allow the country’s safety to be under jeopardy.

“We cannot compromise on safety. The threat is real and we will monitor the situation from time to time,” he said.

Fuzi made it clear that the police will take strict action against the organisers if they remained adamant on holding the festival.

“A total of 26 non-governmental organisations have already submitted a memorandum to the Sultan of Selangor to voice their objection.

“We have also received information that terrorists are planning an attack during the festival,” he said.

He said the police will release an official statement on its stand if the organisers proceed
