Mywatch chief Sanjeevan acquitted of defaming former IGP

PETALING JAYA: The Sessions Court, here, today acquitted and discharged Malaysian Crime Watch Task Force (MyWatch) chairman, Datuk R. Sri Sanjeevan of the charge of defaming former lnspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (IGP) on his Facebook page.
Judge Mohammed Mokhzani Mokhtar released Sanjeevan of the charge without calling for his defence for allegedly posting offensive remarks against Khalid who was the IGP then, after finding that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against the accused.
“The accused is hence, acquitted and discharged,” said the judge.
The prosecution had called four witnesses for the case hearing which started in May, this year.
Sanjeevan, 33, a businessman, was accused of knowingly using a network service application through his Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MalaysianCrimeWatchMyWatch to create and initiate the transmission of the insulting remarks against Khalid with intent to annoy another person’s feelings.
He allegedly committed the offence at a kiosk in USJ1, Subang Jaya at 1.48pm last Sept 3.
The offence committed under Section 233(3) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 carries a fine of up to RM50,000 or a jail term not exceeding one year, and a further fine of RM1,000 for each day the offence continued after the accused is charged.
