Turkish media reported the suspect, identified as Abdulkadir Masharipov but who had operated under the cover name Ebu Muhammed Horasani, was caught along with his four-year-old son in Istanbul's Esenyurt district in a police operation late on Monday (local time).

Authorities are yet to comment.

Masharipov had reportedly been staying in an apartment belonging to a Kyrgyz friend when he was caught, the Turkish website Haberturk said.

According to state-run Anadolu news agency, five people were detained in the operation, including the alleged perpetrator, a man of Kyrgyz origin and three women.

The alleged gunman's wife and one-year-old daughter were reportedly captured during an earlier police operation on January 12.

Television station NTV broadcast separate footage showing plain-clothed police taking away a man in a white top and sweat pants, forcing his head down.

The station said the images showed the gunman's Kyrgyz friend being taken to a police vehicle.

The agency said simultaneous raids were being conducted on other cells linked to the group.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu posted a Twitter message thanking Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu, police and intelligence organisations "who caught the Reina attacker in the name of the people".

The gunman entered the Reina nightclub, which was packed out with between 500 and 600 people, about 1:15am local time on New Year's Day and opened fire with an automatic rifle, reloading his weapon half a dozen times and shooting the wounded as they lay on the ground.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for Turkish military involvement in neighbouring Syria.

Turks as well as visitors from several Arab nations, India and Canada were among those killed in the attack.
