Mamak Gang member killed in shootout with police near Bukit Cherakah

SHAH ALAM: Police shot dead a member of the notorious Mamak Gang in the wee hours of Friday.

The suspect was involved in a high-speed pursuit which ended in a shootout near Bukit Cherakah.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Seri Abdul Samah Mat said the incident occurred at around 4am.

"Members of the Selangor CID serious crimes unit (D9) noticed a suspicious looking car while they were on patrol at Setia Alam.

"The personnel attempted to hail the car down for a routine stop when the suspect sped off.

"Our men pursued the suspect and he rammed into our vehicle and lost control of his car near Bukit Cherakah.

"The suspect got out of his vehicle and opened fire at police," he told reporters at the Selangor police headquarters here on Friday.

He said police were forced to open fire in self-defence.

"The suspect was killed in the shootout.

"Initial investigations revealed the 53-year-old suspect was wanted in connection with several robberies in Selangor, Perak and Penang.

"The suspect has 26 prior criminal records for robberies, break-ins and drug-related crimes," he said.

The suspect was believed to have been a member of the notorious Mamak Gang, a group most noted for the RM12mil Subang airport gold bar heist in 1994.

Initially comprising six brothers from Kuala Kangsar, the gang gained notoriety after pulling off the pre-dawn heist at the cargo complex of the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport by impersonating police officers.

The gang has since dwindled in number following various police crackdowns over nearly two decades.
