KUALA LUMPUR: Four men, including a Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officer, were charged in the Ampang Magistrate’s Court here Friday for participating in a riot at the Puncak Anthenaeum condominium in Bukit Antarabangsa, two weeks ago.

T. Vigneswaran, 40, a nasi lemak seller; Tengku Hazrul Shah Tengku Hamid, 42, owner of a security company; DBKL enforcement officer Mohd Neezam Jelani, 35; and Izakri Zakaria, 38, a personal driver; all pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to them before Magistrate Mohamad Izwan Mohamed Nor.

The four were jointly charged, with two others still at large, for having joined in a riot which could cause hurt, at the guardhouse of the condominium at 2.30pm on Jan 14.

The men were charged under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both, if convicted.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Zuhaini Mahamad Amin offered bail at RM7,000 with one surety for each accused.

Lawyer Badrul Syah Syafiq, who represented the four accused, requested the court reduce the bail amount on the grounds that they had to support their families and had children who were still schooling.

“All the guarantors present are family members of the accused. I believe they will not flee, they have steady jobs and their family members also live here,” said the lawyer.

The court set bail at RM4,000 with one surety for each accused, and fixed March 7 for mention.

Vigneswaran also faced another charge of voluntarily causing hurt to Nepalese security guard, B.K. Shyam, 26, at the same place, time and date.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, or a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

The court granted Vigneswaran bail at RM2,000 with one surety for the charge, in addition to an order not to harass the victim or his representatives, and set March 7 for mention.

Last week, a video recording from an unknown source went viral on social media, showing several men bashing a man lying on the road in the compound of the condominium.

In the Jan 14 incident, the victim, lorry driver Nasrul Faiz Zulfahmi, 25, was brutally assaulted after he accidentally backed into a Mercedes Benz that was parked behind his lorry.

He was kicked and assaulted by several men, leaving him with bruises on several parts of his body and a gash that required 13 stitches on his neck.

On Jan 22, a group of lorry drivers from the Small and Medium Scale Entrepreneurs Alliance of Malaysia (Ikhlas) gathered in solidarity for Nasrul at the Sungei Besi toll plaza. – Bernama
