SUNGAI PETANI: A security guard was shot in the leg but did not relent in his bid to catch an ex-soldier involved in a robbery attempt at a bank in Taman Ria Jaya here.
The lone would-be robber, believed to be the manager of a security firm in charge of the bank, fired two shots, one of which hit Mohd Jefri Ismail in his left leg.
According to a source, despite his injury, the 59-year-old guard continued to hold on to the man, and with the help of his colleague and a bank employee, subdued him. Police arrived later to take in the suspect.
The dramatic botched robbery unfolded at about 8.35am yesterday, when a man brandishing a pistol stormed into the bank along Jalan Cinta Sayang here.
Wearing a crash helmet and a glove on his left hand, he ordered Mohd Jefri, who was armed with a shotgun, and another unarmed guard, to move to the back of the bank.
Mohd Jefri, however, fought back, and in the struggle, the man fired two shots, one of them hitting the guard on his leg.
His colleague and a staff member at the bank then came to his rescue, grappling with the suspect.
Police arrived soon after and arrested the former army man, who was not injured in the incident.
Kuala Muda police chief ACP Md Zukir Md Isa said a team rushed to the bank after receiving a call at about 8.50am.
“They arrested the suspect, who has been remanded until Sunday.
The injured security guard of the bank was sent to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment. His condition is stable,” ACP Md Zukir said.
He added that state police chief Comm Datuk Asri Yusoff would call for a press conference today.
