KUALA LUMPUR: Chaos broke outside the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) ahead of the MIC annual general assembly.
Two warring factions - one group supporting sitting president Datuk Seri Dr. S. Subramaniam and the other supporting former president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel - crowded the entrance of Menara Dato' Onn with placards.
The police Light Strike Force (LSF) unit, which has been on standby in the area since Sunday morning, sprang into action when both sides began shouting, throwing water bottles and hurling obscenities at each other.
A group of Palanivel's supporters called for the removal of Dr Subramaniam as party president.
The situation, however, remained under control with heavy police presence.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected to deliver a speech at the opening ceremony.
