KUALA LUMPUR: Police have crippled the activities of ‘Geng Heng’ who were involved in car theft, burglary and robbery, with the arrest of three men on Sunday and Monday.
Brickfields police chief Assistant Commissioner Sharul Othman Mansor said the men, aged between 35 and 36, were detained separately.
"The first arrest was made at 6.30pm on Sunday, after police were alerted to a burglary at Taman Bukit Indah.
"Within 15 minutes, police managed to detain the first suspect aged 36, near the area. However, two others escaped," he told a press conference at the Brickfields police headquarters today.
"After questioning the first suspect, we made a second arrest at 1.30am. The man, however, broke his leg after falling into a drain in his bid to escape the police.
"The last suspect was detained in Kepong at 4.30pm. All three suspects had previous criminal records.
"The first suspect has three drug and vehicle theft convictions. The second suspect has previous convictions for drug offences and snatch theft, while the third suspect was involved in drugs and burglary cases," he said.
Sharul said they have been remanded for a week.
"Their modus operandi involves them stealing valuables such as handbags and laptops and selling them off at legitimate shops for half the price.
"We also detained three individuals including two women but they were released on police bail.
"The women work at a branded handbag outlet in Berjaya Times Square while the man works at a laptop shop in Jalan Ipoh," he said, adding that the suspects sold the branded items to these two outlets.
Sharul said police would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone willing to take stolen items and sell them.
"Police also seized 16 branded handbags such as Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton as well as 18 laptops at these two outlets, worth more than RM400,000," he said.
Sharul said police also seized a Volkswagen Passat and Toyota Camry, which were used to carry out their activities.
"Further checks showed that the cars were reported missing in Petaling and Bukit Raya, respectively," he said.
