SUBANG JAYA: Two men ganged up on a cigarette seller and tried to rob her but were stopped in their tracks by customers at a food court in Jalan Indah 3/8, Bukit Puchong, here.

The customers managed to catch one the suspects – a 26-year-old man previously arrested for theft and drug use – in the incident at 1.10am Friday.

Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Mohammad Azlin Sadari said the 49-year-old woman was at her stall in front of the food court when two men approached her on the pretext of buying a packet of cigarettes.

"One of the men choked her from behind and told her to remain silent.

"He grabbed her necklace and when she turned around, she saw an object resembling a knife sheath hidden in his jacket," he said.

ACP Azlin said the woman then saw the other suspect stealing her handbag.

The gutsy woman then engaged in a tug-of-war with the suspect for the bag.

"The suspect panicked when she screamed for help and released his grip on the handbag," said ACP Azlin.

The man tried to run to his motorcycle but several customers chased him and caught him.

The trader was sent to Hospital Serdang for injuries on her left shoulder, cheek and wrist.

ACP Azlin said the suspect also received treatment for a fractured right ankle.
