GEORGE TOWN: A canteen operator brutally bashed his girlfriend to death by hitting her repeatedly on the head with a wheel spanner and banging her head against a pillar. He then slept with her corpse for a night before he burnt it the next morning and then coldly chopped up the remains with a hoe.
For this horrific act, Abd Khalid Md Isa, 45, was sentenced to death. He is convicted for the murder of Rohani Hashim, 30, two years ago.
He was sent to the gallows by a High Court here yesterday after pleading guilty to murdering Rohani between Sept 29 at about 3pm and Oct 1, 2014, at about 6.40pm at his house in Jalan Pengkalan Datuk Keramat in Bukit Tengah, Bukit Mertajam.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Jailani Rahman told the court that police investigation revealed that Khalid had repeatedly hit Rohani’s head with the spanner and banged her head against a house pillar in the living room which resulted in her death.
He said Khalid then burnt her body at the mangrove swamp behind his house after which he chopped up her remains with a hoe and buried them in a black plastic bag under a palm tree.
According to the facts of the case, Khalid’s brother-in-law who lives 10m away had heard a woman shouting in Khalid’s house at about 4.30pm on Sept 29, 2014 after seeing Rohani arriving there 90 minutes earlier.
He then heard an object being hit loudly three times and someone uttering “Allah” as though in pain.
Another relative who lived with Khalid had returned home at 6pm but was stopped by him from entering the living room. Khalid handed him a towel and he took a bath and went to his mother’s house next door.
When he returned at about 10pm, Khalid told him to sleep on the living room sofa. He saw Rohani lying underneath a blanket but not moving while Khalid looked anxious and proceeded to lie down beside Rohani.
He found Rohani gone when he woke up at 7am the next day and Khalid told him that she had returned home with her friends.
He left the house and when he returned with Khalid’s sister at about 4.30pm, they found blood stains under the living room carpet and under the sofa. They also saw embers from a fire behind his house.
Upon examination, Khalid’s sister found pieces of flesh, teeth and bones in the fire.
She returned home and told her husband who later lodged a police report.
The police subsequently arrested Khalid and found a black plastic bag buried under a palm tree containing bone fragments and a human skull. The DNA analysis confirmed that the remains belonged to Rohani.
Tony Chew, who represented Khalid, said his client was divorced and has a 14-year-old son.
Judicial Commissioner Datuk Azmi Ariffin said the offence carries the mandatory death penalty and sentenced Khalid to hang at the gallows.
